Whitney High School’s journalism teacher, Sarah Nichols emphasized the importance of creativity and relevance in student reporting. She encouraged journalists to think about the impact of their coverage and bring meaningful and controversial material to their audience, instead of strictly writing simple news stories. Nichols also devised several strategies on using social media to engage students. She showed the audience several examples of high school journalists who exemplified innovation by using original ways to provide students with a different perspective of their school.
