Diversity
All those at Gunn should see their experiences reflected in The Oracle — after all, part of the goal of journalism is to amplify the voices of groups who may not have a platform to discuss their plights. In the past few years, we have begun making efforts to better reflect the diversity of our school in our journalism, promoting story ideas touching on underrepresented groups and keeping ourselves accountable throughout the cycle through diversity audits.
These diversity audits allow us to measure progress toward our goals of diversity, equity and inclusion. Each news cycle, writers are encouraged to reach out to sources of various genders, races, ethnicities and grade levels. After each cycle, the entire staff debriefs the results of the audit, after which the managing staff publishes the results of the diversity audit for readers to view. We hope that these reflections will allow us to better understand different groups and tell stories that might otherwise slip through the cracks.
